First Love

I did this painting in 1990. I was 20 years old. I had just listened to a CBC story about the hole in the ozone layer. I was in school at NSCAD at the time and was doing sketches of Rodin’s scupture “The Kiss”. I incorporated the sketches of the sculpture and quick sketches I did of people on the street. The smog and the meteoric sun are obvious references to the ozone hole, and climate change. The buildings are intended to appear as though they are melting. It is called “First Love”. It is painted on an old canvas window blind and the stretcher is made of wood taken from a construction site. It has a hole chewed in it from my roommate’s parrot.
